“The Locomotive”

Translated from the Spanish of Pablo Neruda by Caleb Beissert

 

 

So powerful, so wheat-bringing, so procreative and whistling and roaring and thundering! It threshed grain, winnowed sawdust, felled forests, sawed lumber, cut timbers, threw smoke, grease, sparks, fire, blasting off whistles that shook the plains.
        I love it, because it looks like Walt Whitman.
